Empowering Vulnerable Afghans through Psychological Counseling

Consequences of the war are throwing Afghan people in to a new world, unknown to them. We propose to run psychological counseling to emerge with strong qualities and tackle the calamity of violence and discrimination so to annihilate anger, suicide and many other reasons that cause depression.

In this project we propose to run psychological counseling centers for Afghan people in order to help those who have experienced different types of violence due to three decades of war in Afghanistan. The goal of this project is to decrease the number of violent incidents and also to minimize self-immolation amongst people.

Since violence against women is a rampant issue in Afghanistan, the targeted group of women and girls in the project area are vulnerable in violence, discrimination and silence. Existence of strong patriarchal traditions and poor knowledge and lack of confidence have hindered them seeking their right to live and earn their livelihood. Moreover, multiple factors such as poverty, insecurity, conflict, unemployment, physical illness, drug use and depression affects people of all ages especially men .

Depression causes mental anguish and impact men’s ability to carry out even the simplest everyday tasks, with sometimes devastating consequences for relationships with family and friends and the ability to earn a life. At worst, depression can also lead to suicide, nowadays the second leading cause of death among 15-29-year-olds is suicide.
